About File Hash Checker

File Hash Checker calculates a digest for a selected file so you can compare it with a checksum supplied by a publisher or release process. A matching digest supports an integrity check only when the reference checksum came from a trusted source.

Reference: NIST Secure Hash Standard (FIPS 180-4)

01

How to use it

  1. Obtain the expected SHA-256 or other checksum from the publisher's authenticated release page or signature workflow.
  2. Select the downloaded file and calculate the same algorithm shown by the publisher.
  3. Compare the complete digest character-for-character; download again or investigate if it differs.

Frequently asked questions

Which hash algorithm should I use?

Use the algorithm published by the trusted source. For new integrity checks, SHA-256 is commonly preferred; MD5 and SHA-1 have known collision weaknesses.

Does a matching hash prove a file is safe?

It supports that the file matches the trusted reference, but it does not replace source authentication, malware scanning, code review, or authorization checks.

Why do two files with the same name have different hashes?

A hash represents file bytes, not its name. Any byte difference, including metadata stored inside some file formats, changes the digest.
